How much matcha should I use?

The right ratio turns the same tin from thin and watery — or muddy and harsh — into a balanced, delicious cup. Here are the numbers that work.

A traditional chashaku holds about one gram per scoop.

Baseline ratios

Scoops, spoons, and grams

A traditional bamboo scoop (chashaku) holds roughly one gram, so classic usucha is "two scoops." A level teaspoon is closer to two grams — convenient, but a small digital scale is the only truly consistent tool.

Two grams, seventy milliliters, a brisk whisk — the reliable bowl.

Ratios are a starting point; your taste is the destination.

Adjusting to taste

If a bowl tastes thin, add powder in half-gram steps rather than reducing water — concentration changes faster than you expect. If it tastes harsh, first check water temperature, then reduce the dose slightly.

Write down the ratio you love. Repeatability is the quiet secret of good tea.
